You Don't Even Know, Dude

So! I saw Eddie Izzard tonight.

It wasn’t really a performance, it was more of a talk with him and Greg Proops (of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and other things) just about his career and style and whatnot, with a brief Q&A after. It was pretty funny. More interesting than funny, really.

They talked about him getting started with acting and street performing (which is apparently much more accepted in Europe, not so much in the UK and America, where he said they were treated like “beggars plus”) and how he performs his material in other countries and other languages (France and Germany, and soon Russia, Nepal, and the various countries where they speak Arabic). He’s also apparently in a new movie version of Treasure Island, which Greg Proops geeked out pretty hard about. (It was released theatrically in the UK, and will premiere on SyFy in the States at… some point.)

The Q&A was decent, as well. One guy asked about a movie of The Riches (maybe, if they get the money), one asked about Eddie’s recent foray into running marathons, (exhausting!) one asked about his appearances on the British shows QI and Mongrel Nation (not horribly interesting, but clearly they were very curious). Someone of course asked about his clothes (she thought he “wasn’t a transvestite anymore” since he’s been wearing men’s clothes more recently) which led to him talking about how he is, and will forever be, a card-carrying transvestite, how they just found the gene for it (some geneticists did some tests on him, apparently) and how he’s been dressing in men’s clothes more, but he didn’t really say what situations called for men’s clothes and what called for women’s, he just said that he was doing boy clothes more recently. (I was hoping for a more direct answer on this, since I’ve always found this aspect of his career really interesting, but you get what you get.)

Overall, it was very amusing (Greg Proops is really funny) and a good way to spend an evening.
